0413: “Get Into Something” by The Isley Brothers

The eighth album by The Isley Brothers opens with a title track that oozes with an old school soul funk that when you hear it, you can also hear a couple of building blocks falling into place that makes this a contributor to the roots of hip hop. This was tailor-made for the future, while also giving James Brown a run for his money (Brown still wins, but the Isley’s landed a lot of punches over the years). The longest track on the album clocking in at almost exactly seven and a half minutes, “Get Into Something” is something you would dig if you had The O’Jays and Parliament in your record collection. Funky and atmospheric but with a grounding sense of traditional soul craftsmanship. Though it came out in 1970, it has 1954 through 1984 packed into it.
